Het was destijds de eerste echte Claas trekker die de fabrikant presenteerde na de overname van Renault in 2003. De Terra Trac onder de trekker is vooral bedoeld voor het trekvermogen. Daarin zit ook het verschil met de oogstmachines op een rupsonderstel, waarbij het vooral gaat om het tegengaan van bodemverdichting. Om het vermogen van de trekker op de grond over te brengen, heeft de trekker onder meer een groter aandrijfwiel dan de oogstmachines.
